Strengthening Citizenship: Empowering Youth in the Balkans
Date of publication: August 13, 2025.
Building on the success of past Certified Training Programs, which have trained young leaders and equipped them with the skills to become active citizens, the World Youth Alliance is launching a new initiative: Promoting EU Values and Youth Engagement in the Western Balkans. Promoting EU values and youth participation in the Western Balkans.
Running online from September 9 to October 21, 2025, this program will gather 25 participants aged 18–30 from Belgium, Bosnia & Herzegovina, Spain, Kosovo, Albania, and Croatia. Guided by two of WYA’s international experts, the training will strengthen the role of young people in shaping civic life and advancing democratic values.
This initiative is designed to promote active citizenship and the core values of the European Union, including human dignity, freedom, solidarity, tolerance, and non-discrimination. By placing education at the center, it creates opportunities for youth to deepen their understanding of EU values, foster intercultural dialogue, and build meaningful connections that transcend borders.
Through interactive training and collaborative exchanges, participants will explore themes of citizenship, inclusion, and solidarity, while also contributing to a stronger youth dimension in EU–Western Balkan relations. The program aims to equip young leaders with the knowledge, skills, and confidence to make a lasting impact in their communities and in building a more cohesive Europe.
The program is part of WYA’s broader commitment to empower youth as active citizens and is supported by key partners across Europe and the Western Balkans. It is implemented within the ˝Empowering Human Dignity of EU & WB youth˝ project, funded by the Erasmus+ programme of the European Union. The program is also made possible through the collaboration of key partners across Europe: Bosnian Representative Association for Valuable Opportunities from Bosnia & Herzegovina, Alianza Mundial de la Juventud España from Spain, Këshilli i Veprimit Rinor – Prizren from Kosovo, EPOKA University from Albania and Svjetski savez mladih Jugoistočna Europa (SSM JIE) from Croatia.
